Boat trip on the Volta River 2-17-2015

We went in a small canoe on the Volta River. We road down to where the river meets the ocean and then up to Pediatorkope Island to see the empower playground. The island does not have electricity or running water. The school has a merry go round and swing set set up on the playground to generate all the electricity the school needs. The kids can also recharge a lantern to take home and do homework. The village also has a recharging station where they can pay 400 cedi to be a part of. Then they can get up to 3 lights installed that are 3 watt bulbs. If they run an outdoor one all night and the 2 indoor ones for a few hours in the evening-the battery will last a month. Then they exchange it for a charged one. The charging station has solar panels on the roof.

Making Batik Cloth 2-14-2015

We were able to learn about how to make Batik cloth and make our own.

next we choose stamps
First we dye our fabric a color

3rd we dip them in wax
then dye it a second color
then stamp the wax in a pattern on the cloth to protect that area from 2nd color

it does not look right

but as it dries it turns the right color

then they put it in boiling water to take off the wax
